Athens, Ga. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team currently sits in tenth place after shooting a team score of 312 on Friday, April 19 in the opening round of the 2002 Southeastern Conference Championships at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
Senior Towa Okiyama led the Lady Kats with a 3-over par 75. Okiyama’s 75 was good enough to land her in a tie for 18th place with two rounds to play. Other UK scores included Rachel Lester with a 77, Kelly Anders with a 79, Kristen Pepe with an 81 and Lauren George with an 83.
Auburn leads the team competition after firing an impressive 280 on the first day. Auburn’s 8-under par performance was nine strokes better than second-place South Carolina. Last year’s SEC Champion Kristy McPherson of South Carolina is tied with three other players for the top individual spot with a 69.
The SEC Championship will continue on Saturday, April 20 with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with the third and final round.
