Columbus, Ohio – University of Kentucky women’s tennis standout Amy Trefethen took Championship honors at the National Amateur Hardcourts, the second leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Circuit, on Tuesday, July 16 in Columbus, Ohio. Trefethen, who recently completed her junior year at UK, took the title in a strong final-match performance.
Trefethen reached the finals with some impressive wins, including a straight-sets victory over the University of Michigan’s top player Kavitha Tipirneni. However, the Sarasota, Fla., native saved her best performance for the final when she met nationally ranked Sadhaf Pervez of Ohio State. Trefethen captured the opening set 6-4, before Pervez knotted the match at one set each by taking the second-set tiebreaker, 7-6. According to summer circuit regulations, the players then faced off in a third-set supertiebreaker, which stipulates that, the first player to 10 points and winning by two points wins the match. Trefethen cut through the pressure and stepped up to the challenge by taking the third set and the Championship by a score of 14-12.
“Amy is playing great tennis right now and she is extremely deserving of thisaccomplishment,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “She had a good showing this week and has been playing at a very high level for some time now. This is a big day for her and UK women’s tennis.”
