The UK women’s tennis team will have two doubles teams participating in the 2002 Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships.
Leading the charge for the Cats will be seniors Jill Buckley and Amy Trefethen, who received an automatic bid after their victory at last week’s Southeastern Regional Championship. Senior Sarah Witten and first-year partner Nathalie Roels, a freshman, received an at-large bid based on their 11-3 record, which includes a victory over Vanderbilt’s doubles team of Sarah Riske and Aleke Tsoubanos, who are ranked No. 1 in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Kentucky is the only school to have two teams participating in the 16-team field, which consists of the best doubles teams in women’s college tennis.
“I’m very happy for our teams to be going to this tournament,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “For Jill and Amy to be playing as well as they have and Sarah and Nathalie to get the at-large bid is remarkable for UK tennis.”
The tournament, hosted by Southern Methodist, will be played at the Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas. Play begins Thursday, Nov. 7 and will end Sunday, Nov. 10.
