Sophomore Jesse Witten was defeated Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2002 ITA/Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships at the Bookhaven Country Club in Dallas, Texas. Witten, the No. 2 seed, won his round of 16 match against Washington’s Matt Hanlin but fell in three sets to 13th-ranked Todd Widom from Miami.
In his first match, Witten took on Hanlin, who was unseeded in the tournament but came in ranked 23rd in the nation. Witten broke Hanlin’s serve and held on the win the first set, 6-4. The second set went to a tiebreaker. Witten outlasted Hanlin, winning the tiebreaker 12-10.
Widom had advanced to the quarterfinals with a win earlier in the day over Stanford’s David Martin, seeded 6th. Although Witten was able to take the first set 6-4, Widom bounced back to win the second and third sets, both 6-4.
