Kentucky starter Heath Castle (1-0) threw 6 2/3 innings, scattering six hits and allowing only one run en route to earning his victory of the season in Kentucky’s 2-1 victory over Purdue. After the Boilermakers (4-2, 0-0 Big Ten) had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a run-scoring single from Daniel Underwood, UK third baseman Jake Kungl delivered a single to right to score two and give Kentucky (6-6, 0-0 SEC) a 2-1 lead.
The Kentucky bullpen took it from there, with Rob Bland and Kalen Gibson combining for 2 1/3 innings of shutout baseball, allowing only one hit. Gibson, a freshman from Slaughters, Ky., picked up the first save of his young career. Purdue starter Scott Byrnes (0-1) suffered the loss.
The Kentucky offense managed only six hits on the afternoon, by six different batters, while Purdue got only seven hits of its own.
The same two teams will be in action on Sunday, March 9th, in the rubber match of the three game series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
