Men's Golf

Tallhassee, Fla. – The Kentucky men’s golf team is in 11th place after the first round of the Seminole Intercollegiate Golf Tournament being played at Golden Eagle Country Club in Tallahassee, Fla.

The first day of the event was scheduled for the first two rounds of the tournament, however the 15 teams were delayed after darkness fell leaving several players, including UK’s Brandon Waldrop and John Holmes, with one or two holes left to play.

After finishing the first round with an 11-over-par 299 the Cats found themselves in a tie for 11th place, 17 strokes behind leader Charleston. But Kentucky was able to make a surge in the second round and will begin its final two holes at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday at 5-under-par for the second round and six over for the tournament.

Holmes and Waldrop, both sophomores, finished the first round of the tournament at 3-over par and even par respectively. At the time of the delay, Waldrop was still even with one hole to play and Holmes was one under in the second round with two to play. Making the biggest charge for the Cats was senior Ryan Coyne who followed up his first round 78(+6) with a 3-under par 69. Freshman Matt Kohn also improved upon his first-round 74 with a second-round 71.

“We’re playing really well in the second round,” Coach Brian Craig said. “Hopefully we can keep it going on Tuesday and be right in the thick of things at the end.”

Defending champion North Carolina is tied for third after the first round and tournament host Florida State is in 13th. After those teams with holes left to play in the second round are finished, each of the 15 teams will begin the third and final round with a shotgun start.
