ATHENS, Ga. – After second round play, the University of Kentucky women’s golf team dropped a spot to 16th in the overall standings at the 17-team Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga. The Cats carded a 312 Saturday at the par-72, 6,014-yard University of Georgia Golf Course, one stroke higher than their first-round showing. UK trails co-leaders Florida and Duke by 35 strokes going into Sunday’s final round.
Senior Rachel Lester remains within striking distance of the top of the leader-board. Lester shot a four-over 76 in the second round, landing the native of Fayetteville, Ga. in a tie for 11th place. Lester will begin final-round play six strokes behind Elizabeth Janangelo of Duke and Ohio State’s Lindsay Knowlton for top-individual honors.
Senior Kelly Anders and junior Eva Gessner shot encouraging second rounds, improving from their first-round showings. Anders carded a five-over 77, beating her previous round by four strokes, while Gessner shot a seven-over 79, besting her first round by three strokes.
Kentucky will wrap up play in the Liz Murphey Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.
