The University of Kentucky men’s golf team, which made its first NCAA Championships appearance in 15 years last season, announced its 2003-04 schedule on Monday. Brian Craig, the Cats’ third-year head coach, will guide UK in four fall tournament appearances and six spring tournaments, not including the SEC Championships and other post-season events.
UK opens the fall season at the Cleveland Golf Kiawah Island Intercollegiate (College of Charleston) at the Turtle Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, South Carolina. The Cats will also compete in the Mason Rudolph Championships (Vanderbilt University), the Franklin Street Trust Invitational (UNC) and will co-host the Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate in Tampa, Fla., along with the University of Florida. UK finished second out of 15 teams in the weather shortened Gary Koch Invitational last season.
In the spring, the Cats will return to Florida for two more tournaments and travel south of the border to Puerto Rico to participate in the Hyatt Dorado Beach Intercollegiate (Georgia State). In early April, the Cats will play host to the Johnny Owens Invitational before concluding the regular season at the Boilermaker Invitational (Purdue University).
UK is poised to make a run at its second consecutive NCAA Championships appearance with the return of four starters, including two-time All-SEC performer John Holmes. Holmes competed in the 103rd U.S. Open as an amateur in June after a stellar sophomore campaign with the Cats.
