The Kentucky softball team pounded out 27 hits en route to a 22-4 win over the Georgetown Tigers in the Cats’ first scrimmage of the fall Sunday afternoon at the UK softball field. Four different Cats scattered four hits during the 10-inning scrimmage, while freshman Brooke Marnitz accounted for five of UK’s runs with five RBI.
Marnitz got the Cats off to a fast start in the first, as she took a pitch from Georgetown’s Calista Capin over the wall for a homerun in her first at bat as a Wildcat. Kentucky added three more in the third, as freshman Amber Janneck launched one over the wall and Marnitz batted in two more runs with a single.
“I am very pleased with the way our freshman played in the scrimmage,” coach Beth Pruitt said. “Brooke and Amber really gave our team a lift and I think it is just the beginning of what we will see out of them as Wildcats. Even though it was just a scrimmage, I think our team gave it their best effort and I am excited to see how much we can improve throughout our fall schedule.”
The Tigers scored all of their four runs in the third inning. Four of Georgetown’s 16 hits came on four consecutive singles to start the frame, and RBI singles from Christine Garnett, Allison Cook and Toni Stevenson tied the game at four through three innings.
Amy Kendall was impressive on the mound for the Cats, going seven innings on the hill, giving up three earned runs and only one walk while striking out five. Meghan Cooper and Crystalie Wolfe combined for the last three shutout innings of work for Kentucky.
The Cats finish up their fall slate with a visit from Belmont on Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. and a two-day tournament on Oct. 11 and 12. All games will be held at the UK softball complex.
