The UK softball team split a pair of games Saturday at the 2003 Battle Against Breast Cancer Tournament at the UK Softball Complex. The Cats beat Georgetown 8-1 in game one before falling 7-5 to Western Kentucky.
UK got off to a quick start against the Tigers, as freshman Amber Janneck hit a solo homerun in the third to give the Cats a 1-0 early lead. Kentucky tacked on five runs in the seventh inning, as Jessica Nance and Meghan Cooper drove in two runs with consecutive base hits, and Katie Campbell followed by reaching base on an error to bring home Nance and Cooper. Brooke Marnitz and Nance each had impressive three-hit games, and Cooper added a complete game on the mound, giving up nine hits and only one run in seven innings.
Kentucky got a spark in their second game from starting pitcher Amy Kendall, who accounted for three of UK’s five runs with a three-run homerun over the left field wall in the third inning. Kendall also went the distance on the mound, but the Cats couldn’t overcome the Hilltoppers’seven runs on eight hits, falling 7-5.
Kentucky returns to action Sunday, as they face Morehead State at 2 p.m. and Eastern Kentucky at 4 p.m.
