AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team (6-5-2, 4-0-1) remains unbeaten in conference play after battling the Auburn Tigers (8-2-3, 1-1-2) to a 1-1 tie at the Auburn Soccer Complex. The ’03 Cats become the first Kentucky team to remain unbeaten after five conference matches.
After a few apparent scoring opportunities were nullified by offside calls, the Cats found the net in the 33rd minute. Ashley Schillig took a feed from Lauren Russell just outside of the left side of the penalty box. The transfer from Marshall drove through the left side and drove a line drive from 11 yards out past All-American goalkeeper Megan Rivera for a 1-0 Kentucky lead the Cats would take into the half.
Auburn would answer in the 23rd minute as Chrissy Culver found the back of the net from point-blank range after a series of well-placed passes. The Tigers set up a free kick in the final minute but were thwarted by the Kentucky defense.
In the first overtime, Kentucky’s two scoring opportunities came up empty. Elizabeth Ramsey poked a shot from seven yards out, but Rivera was there for the save. Three minutes later, Jen Weakley lined a shot from 15 yards out, but once again, Rivera made the stop.
After Auburn failed on a scoring opportunity in the second overtime, the Tigers tallied three-consecutive corner kicks, but the Kentucky defense and goalkeeper Liz Butler stood tall each time.
The Cats return to the pitch this Friday, Oct. 17 in Gainesville, Fla. when the Cats visit Florida.
