The Kentucky women?s basketball team looks to return to their winning ways when they take on the RedHawks of Miami University on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. ET in Millett Hall. All the action can be heard on WLXG-AM Sports Radio 1300 with Chris Cross.
The Wildcats (4-4) have lost two straight, falling to Atlantic 10 opponents Xavier and Temple in their last two games. The Miami RedHawks (4-3) are riding a three-game win streak after defeating Wichita State, Indiana State and Butler. ?Miami is a very tough opponent,? UK Coach Mickie DeMoss said. ?They?ve got a lot of weapons and a great coach and we can?t take any opponent on our schedule lightly. Last season, Rita Adams was a big reason UK beat Miami in overtime and we?ll have to play extremely well on Saturday.?
Last season, senior Rita Adams poured in 22 of her game-high 29 points in the second half to lead Kentucky to a 108-102 overtime win over Miami in Lexington. UK leads the all-time series 11-2 and has won six of the last seven meetings with the Mid-American Conference opponent. However, both of UK?s losses in the all-time series have come when playing the game in Oxford. UK?s last meeting at Miami was a 73-64 setback in 2001.
Leading the way for UK is senior SeSe Helm and junior Sara Potts. Helm, a 6-4 center from Bowling Green, Ky., is nearly averaging a double-double with 17.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Potts, a 6-0 swing player from Rochester Hills, Mich., follows with 13.9 ppg and 6.4 rpg. Helm and Potts aren?t the only offensive threats for the Wildcats. Jenny Pfeiffer is averaging 10.4 points per game and is coming off back-to-back double-digit performances, including a season-high 21 points vs. Xavier and 14 points vs. Temple. Pfeiffer also is shooting a team-high 81.5 percent from the free throw line, connecting on 22-of-27.
The RedHawks are led by sophomore guard Cindi Merrill and senior forward Colleen Day, averaging 14.0 and 13.1 points per game, respectively.
Coach Maria Fantanarosa is in her sixth season at the helm of the Miami program. She led the RedHawks to a Mid-American Conference East Division Championship last season with a 17-5 overall record and an 11-5 finish in the MAC.
Following the game with Miami, the Wildcats have only 24 hours before hitting the road again. UK will take on intrastate rival Western Kentucky on Monday, Dec. 22 at 8 p.m. ET in Bowling Green at the E.A. Diddle Arena.
