Lexington, (Ky.) ? Eastern Michigan scored six times in the top of the fifth inning, en route to handing Kentucky its first loss of the season, a 14-5 decision at Cliff Hagan Stadium on Friday. The Eagles collected 20 hits on the afternoon and capitalized on three Kentucky errors.
Eastern Michigan got the scoring started early, as each of the first three Eagles who came to the plate eventually scored in the inning. Brian Bixler walked to start the game and after Ryan Ford reached on a fielder?s choice, Derrick Peterson singled to score Bixler. Ford and Peterson both crossed the plate on Todd Kemling?s double.
The Wildcats got on the board in the second inning when Justin Scutchfield doubled with two outs and scored on Spencer Graeter?s single. Another UK run scored in the third as Caleb Stewart doubled and later scored on a balk.
EMU stretched its lead in the fourth when Peterson drove in Bixler, who had reached on a double. UK came back with two in the bottom of the fifth on an Aaron Edwards double and a Billy Grace triple. Grace scored on Jake Kungl?s sacrifice fly.
James Rodriquez (0-1) started for Kentucky and took the loss. Rodriquez threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on 10 hits. Ryan Ford (2-0) got his second win of the season. Ford threw five innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits.
Stewart led the UK offense, posting a 3-for-5 afternoon, while Gilvin had two hits. Peterson was 4-for-5 with five runs batted in and three runs scored.
This game was the first of four between the two schools. They return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. (ET) start from Cliff Hagan Stadium. The Wildcats will look to rebound as they send sophomore Craig Snipp to the mound.
