ATHENS, Ga. ? The University of Kentucky men?s and women?s swimming & diving squads completed day one of the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships at Georgia?s Gabrielsen Natatorium with three Wildcats having competed in the finals of their respective events.
UK junior Jessica Siegele broke her own Kentucky 100-yard backstroke record in the consolation final. The Wexford, Pa., native eclipsed the 55.59 time she clocked three months ago at the Nike Cup with a 55.38 to place 10th overall. After edging out Tennessee?s Javan Tarantino for the remaining finals berth with a preliminary round score of 516.55, UK junior Mario Rodriguez claimed eighth place in the three-meter diving event with a tally of 470.95, marking the first time he has placed at the SEC Championships.
Sophomore Daniel Farnham took seventh place with a time of 20.19 in the 50-yard freestyle event after qualifying for the event in the morning preliminaries. Junior Tim Patrick clocked a 20.25 to place eighth. Junior Clay Gasparovich finished 12th after clocking a 20.38 in the consolation final. Senior Fernando Barros registered a 20.64 to take 15th place.
Freshman Alejandro Bravo turned in a 50.15 to take fifth in the 100-yard backstroke consolation final, good for 13th place overall.
The Cats closed out the evening with a ninth-place showing in the women?s 800-yard freestyle relay and a fourth-place finish for the UK men.
In the afternoon women?s one-meter diving preliminaries, UK?s Jessica Thompson, Kari Retrum, Jillian Becker and Joey Brown took 13th, 15th, 16th and 23rd place, respectively.
The Kentucky men end day one in fifth place overall with 78 points, while the Kentucky women rank ninth in the conference with 32 points.
Day two of the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships consists of the 500-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard breaststroke, 400-yard freestyle relay, men?s one-meter diving and women?s three-meter diving. The potential of inclement weather conditions in the Athens area Wednesday may alter the event schedule.
