ATHENS, Ga. ? Kentucky junior Aibika Kalsarieva and freshman Sarah Foster make their respective NCAA individual debuts Monday when the 2004 NCAA Women?s Singles and Doubles Championships kick off at Georgia?s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Kalsarieva, an All-SEC selection in her first season of NCAA tennis, officially earned an ITA All-America designation by way of her seeding in the NCAA singles tournament. Kalsarieva earned a ?9-16? seed by way of her No. 16 ITA singles ranking and will face Washington?s 33rd-ranked Claire Carter, a three-time All-American, Monday at 11:30 a.m.
Foster, the SEC Freshman of the Year out of Lexington Christian Academy, enters the singles tournament ranked No. 48 by the ITA. Foster faces a stiff challenge in Clemson?s sixth-ranked Julie Coin, also at 11:30 a.m. Monday.
Foster and Kalsarieva also will participate in the 32-team doubles competition, which begins Tuesday. The 14th-ranked Kentucky pair faces off against Michigan?s 41st-ranked duo of Michelle DaCosta and Kara Delicata at an as-yet undetermined time. Foster Adds Another Honor
Sarah Foster has added another post-season honor to her impressive resume. Foster picked up the ITA Southeast Region Freshman of the Year nod Sunday evening at the NCAA/ITA post-season awards banquet. Foster?s selection is the second in as many years for a Kentucky player. Nathalie Roels earned SEC and ITA Freshman of the Year honors in 2003.
