Kentucky senior Daniel Cruz fell just shy in his bid for an Olympic berth Saturday evening, taking sixth in the 200-meter butterfly final at the U.S. Olympic Trials ? Swimming in Long Beach, Calif.

Cruz clocked a time of 1:58.62 in the event, about a two-tenths of a second improvement from his semifinal time of 1:58.83. Michael Phelps, the world-record holder in the event, took first, while two-time Olympian Tom Malchow took second. Cruz resumes competition Monday in the 100-meter butterfly preliminary round.

Former Cat Rachel Komisarz fell two spots shy of making the Olympic team in another event after winning the 100-meter butterfly on Thursday. She placed sixth in the 200-meter freestyle final with a time of 2:00.23. A top-two showing would have earned her an Olympic berth in the event, while a top-four finish would have scored her a spot on the U.S. 800-meter freestyle relay team in Athens.

Kentucky junior Shantel Commander will take part in Sunday?s 200-meter breaststroke preliminary round.
