MAMARONECK, N.Y. ? Kentucky men’s golf standout John Holmes fell just short of the quarterfinals in the second round of the US Amateurs Thursday in Maaroneck, N.Y.

After winning the first round of play against Tom Glissmeyer of Colorado Springs, Colo., Holmes, a PING All-American and Campbellsville, Ky. native, found himself three holes down during second round play. On the back nine, Holmes made a comeback, returning the match to All Square through the 14th hole. However, even with his brilliant play on the back nine, Holmes could not hold off Luke List who ended the match two up to advance to Friday?s quarterfinals.

?Even though John is disappointed and expected to continue further in the tournament, he made it to the final sixteen golfers in match play at the most prestigious amateur tournament in the United States.? UK Coach Brian Craig said. ?We are very proud of John and look forward to his return to the Wildcat family.?

Holmes made the first cut by shooting a pair of 2-over-par rounds during Tuesday?s stroke play. He tied for eighth and was seeded 11th as the field was cut to 64 golfers to begin match play. In his first round of match play Wednesday Holmes was three holes up on Brady Myers through the 11th but bogeyed the final three holes to force a playoff and qualify him for the second round of match play.

Quarterfinal action begins tomorrow with a field of eight at the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y. The tournament is being televised on ESPN2.
