The Kentucky women?s tennis program welcomes its first home event of the 2004-05 season, the Kentucky Fall Invitational, to UK?s Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex this weekend. The three-day event features five singles flights and five doubles flights and includes 2004 NCAA singles and doubles quarterfinalists. Singles action begins Friday at 9 a.m. EDT with doubles play to follow later in the afternoon.
Joining the Cats in Lexington are teams from Abilene Christian, Arkansas, Illinois, Louisville, Marshall, Middle Tennessee State, Ohio State, Purdue and William & Mary. Headlining the singles brackets are Kentucky?s own Aibika Kalsarieva and Sarah Foster, ranked Nos. 9 and 32, respectively, by the ITA in singles play. The pair also comprises the nation?s third-ranked doubles tandem. At the 2004 NCAA Championships, Kalsarieva became the first Wildcat to reach the quarterfinals of the singles championships. Foster turned in a banner freshman season a year ago and took home the SEC Freshman of the Year and ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year awards.
The field also includes seven student-athletes featured in the ITA top-125 singles rankings: No. 15 Megan Muth of William & Mary; No. 63 Jenny Klaschka of Middle Tennessee State; No. 82 Lena Sherbakov of William & Mary; No. 93 Hala Sufi of Purdue; No. 99 Candice Fuchs and No. 109 Amy Wei of William & Mary and No. 110 Cynthya Goulet of Illinois. William & Mary?s Muth and Wei teamed up to make the quarterfinals of the 2004 NCAA Doubles Championships, while another tournament participant, Louisville native Ashley Kroh of Marshall, finished as the 2004 NCAA Doubles Runner-Up with graduated partner Jessica Johnson.
