Kentucky continues its push for SEC and NCAA Tournament berths Friday when the Cats travel to Oxford, Miss., to face Ole Miss. The match is set for 8 p.m. EDT at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
UK (6-8-1, 3-4-1) is looking to get back on track after dropping close matches at Georgia and Tennessee last weekend. The Cats will need to regain their offensive touch in their remaining three matches to contend for postseason play. Kentucky is 1-4 in its last five matches, a span during which the Cats have only dented the net once.
Friday?s match has plenty of SEC Tournament implications. Only eight of the 12 teams in the conference qualify for the conference tournament, and Ole Miss (7-8-1, 3-4-1), Kentucky and Mississippi State currently round out the final three qualifiers in the field. Ole Miss holds a tiebreaker advantage over Kentucky by way of goal differential in SEC matches, though the advantage would be nullified by a Kentucky victory Friday in Oxford.
As with Kentucky, the Rebels? most recent win in its last four matches came against South Carolina, though Ole Miss managed a scoreless tie last Sunday at No. 12 Florida. Ole Miss features senior All-SEC midfielder Kristal Menard, a Crestwood, Ky., native. Menard is joined on the roster by fellow Kentuckians Lindley and Hillary Beckman of Anchorage. Ole Miss will honor Menard and Lindley Beckman in the team?s Senior Day festivities prior to the match.
The Cats? and Rebels? last two meetings came in the opening round of the 2002 and 2003 SEC Tournaments. Kentucky dealt Ole Miss a 2-1 defeat in the 2002 tournament in Oxford, while the Rebels returned the favor by the same count a season ago in Orange Beach, Ala. Kentucky owns a 6-2 series advantage against Ole Miss.
