The Kentucky women?s basketball team will take on intrastate rival Louisville on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. in Freedom Hall. Adult tickets are only $5 and children ages 18 and under are admitted free. The contest marks the 41st meeting between the schools in the annual ?Battle of the Bluegrass?, ranking as the second-longest series for the Cats. UK has met only the Tennessee Lady Volunteers (43 times) more than the Cardinals.
UK owns a 28-12 lead in the all-time series, after defeating the Cards in Rupp Arena last season 84-80 in overtime. The series is tied at 9-9 when playing the game in Louisville. The Cats have won four of the last six meetings but look to snap a two-game losing streak in Freedom Hall. UK?s last win in Louisville was a 69-56 decision on Jan. 20, 1999.
This marks the fifth of five consecutive road games for the Cats.
?We’ve been on the road quite a bit, but I think this game comes at a good time,? UK Coach Mickie DeMoss said. ?We’re certainly excited about playing. I think anytime we play Louisville, in any sport at Kentucky, it’s a big game. I know our players are looking forward to it. We had off yesterday so we’re back out there today to get ready for a very good Louisville team. We certainly have to go over there prepared and ready to play.”
The Cats (4-2) are coming off a hard-fought road game against Big 10 foe Northwestern Wednesday. UK defeated NU 70-63 in Evanston, Ill. Five Wildcats scored in double figures led by senior Sara Potts? 15 points. Jennifer Humphrey and Angela Phillips each scored 11 points while Nastassia Alcius and Sara Elliott followed with 10 points apiece.
Potts is the team?s leading scorer with 18.2 points per game. Freshman center Sarah Elliott is the second leading scorer, shooting an impressive 64.9 percent from the field on 24-of-37. She averages 9.3 ppg. Leading the charge on the boards is junior forward/center Jennifer Humphrey. She is pulling down 9.3 rebounds per game, ranking third in the Southeastern Conference standings.
The Cards (2-2) face Indiana Friday in Bloomington. Like Kentucky, U of L participated in the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. The Cards played in the two-game St. Thomas division, defeating Hampton in the first round before falling to NC State in the championship game.
Jazz Covington and Missy Taylor lead the Cardinals in scoring, averaging 17.5 and 14.3 ppg, respectively. Covington also is the team?s leading rebounder with 11.8 rpg.
