The Kentucky Wildcat softball team remains winless on the year after it lost a pair of games in the second day of play at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. The Cats fall to 0-9 after dropping a 14-3 decision to the No. 6-ranked Stanford Cardinal (5-1) in the first game of the afternoon. Kentucky then lost 5-1 to the Cal-Poly Mustangs (6-3).
Stanford took an early 5-0 lead in the first on three hits, including a two-run homerun by Michelle Smith.
The Cats got on the board in the top of the second. Emily Marks drew a two-out walk and scored when catcher Katie Campbell sent the pitch from Becky McCullough over the left-center field wall to make it 5-2.
The Cardinal bats came alive in the home half of the inning as the plated two runs in the second and five more in the third to take a 12-2 lead. A pair of runs in the fourth made it a 14-2 SU lead.
UK added a run in the top of the fifth as freshman Amber Nix delivered a run-scoring groundout in her first collegiate at-bat. The Wildcats stranded a pair of runners at the corners when Amber Janneck flew out to left to end the game after four-and-a-half innings.
Meghan Cooper (0-4) took the loss for the Cats on the mound, but reached base twice with a pair of walks. Campbell?s homer was the lone hit for the Wildcats in the loss.
In the nightcap, the Cats got on the board first. Megan Glenn doubled to deep center field and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Ashley Fertic. The Mustangs tied it and took a two-run lead behind three straight extra-base hits to take a 3-1 lead. CP plated single runs in the fourth and fifth to hold on for the 5-1 win.
Samantha Allen fell to 0-4 on the year after giving up four earned runs non nine hits over 4.1 innings.
The Wildcats wrap up play with a Sunday contest against the DePaul Blue Demons at noon.
