The Kentucky women?s basketball team plays its regular-season finale Sunday when the Wildcats meet the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks in Memorial Coliseum. Tip off is set for 1 p.m. EST and the game will be televised live on WKYT-TV/UPN. It also can be heard on WLXG Sports Radio 1300-AM with Chris Cross. Seniors Danyelle Payne, Sara Potts and Keiko Tate will be honored prior to tip-off during ?Senior Day? ceremonies.
?We certainly are looking to get back on the winning track,? UK Coach Mickie DeMoss said. ?We had some hard fought games in the past couple of weeks and we have the opportunity to close out the regular season on a positive note. It should be a good match-up on Sunday. Arkansas has some veteran players but like us, has been struggling in conference play. We are glad to be back at home in Memorial Coliseum.?
The Wildcats (14-14, 3-10 Southeastern Conference) are coming off a 60-47 loss at South Carolina on Thursday. Freshman guard Samantha Mahoney notched her first career double-double with a game-high 19 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Senior guard/forward Sara Potts is leading UK in scoring with 13.2 points per game, while freshman center Sarah Elliott and Mahoney are averaging 10.8 and 10.6 ppg, respectively for the Cats. Junior forward/center Jennifer Humphrey leads the Cats in scoring with 6.6 boards per game, while sophomore point guard Angela Phillips has dished out a team-high 97 assists.
Arkansas (15-11, 3-10 SEC) is coming off a home loss to No. 1 LSU on Thursday and is led by sophomore forward Sarah Pfeifer, who is averaging 10.7 points per game. Fellow sophomores Danielle Allen and Kristin Peoples each are averaging 9.4 ppg.
Susie Gardner is in her second season as the head coach of the Lady ?Backs and is no stranger to the SEC, having played at Georgia from 1983-86 and leading the Lady Bulldogs to two Final Fours and three SEC Championships.
This is the 19th meeting between the two schools and Arkansas leads the all-time series 12-6. The Lady ?Backs have won 10 of the last 11 meetings with the Cats, including six consecutive. Arkansas took a 68-58 decision over the Cats last season in Fayetteville.
Kentucky will return to action Thursday in the first round of the SEC Tournament in Greenville, S.C., against an opponent to be determined. The winner of the UK-Arkansas game will determine whether the Wildcats earn as the No. 10 or No. 11 seed in the tournament.
