COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ? The Kentucky rifle team earned a sixth-place finish over the weekend in the NCAA Championships at the Olympic Training Center.
The team took home eighth place in air rifle and sixth place in smallbore. Army won the overall title, dethroning defending champion Alaska-Fairbanks. Jacksonville State took home the air rifle title by beating out Nebraska on center shots. Alaska-Fairbanks won the smallbore.
Freshman Ray Geyer led the way for Kentucky with a career-high 590 air rifle score while shooting a 585 on the smallbore course.
Fellow freshman Chris Boggs was the only Wildcats competing for an individual national championship. He placed 12th in the country in smallbore.
The sixth place finish is three spots higher than the Wildcats placed a year ago. The team returns all but one shooter to next year?s team.
