The Wildcat softball team dropped a 9-2 decision to No. 13 Georgia today, Mar. 16, as the Bulldogs swept the Southeastern Conference series to improve to 22-7 on the year and stay perfect at 6-0 in league play. Kentucky falls to 12-19 overall and 1-5 in SEC competition.
Brooke Marnitz went 2-for-3 for the Wildcats and scored a run, while Katie Campbell drove in a pair of runs with her second home run of the season. Jessica Nance and Ashley Fertic each singled for the final UK two hits of the game.
The Cats committed five costly errors in the field and could not recover as the Bulldogs managed nine runs on 11 hits on the day.
UGA took an early two-run lead in the top of the first. Kentucky tied it at two in the bottom of the second after Marnitz singled up the middle and scored on Campbell?s shot over the right field fence.
Samantha Allen held the Georgia lineup to two runs until the fifth when they added a three-spot on three hits and two Wildcat errors to go on top 5-2. Meghan Cooper relieved Allen and got a groundout to second to end the inning.
After a scoreless sixth, the Bulldogs plated four runs in the seventh on three this and two more UK fielding mishaps to take the 9-2 lead. Michelle Green (10-2) retired the side in order in the home half of the seventh, handing the Cats their fifth straight loss.
UK returns to action this weekend, Mar. 19-20, when it travels to take on Alabama. The three-game series kicks off with a noon doubleheader Saturday, Mar. 19, and wraps up with a single contest Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in Tuscaloosa.
