LEXINGTON ? Kentucky men?s soccer standout Andy Gruenebaum helped lead his Des Moines Menace team to a 5-1 victory over the Atlanta Silverbacks on Wednesday in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Gruenebaum, the Wildcats? starting goalkeeper, earned the win after allowing a single goal on a direct free kick. However, by that point, the Menace had already built a 3-0 lead and were well on their way to victory.
With the win, the Menace became the first Premier Development League team in two years to reach the round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup, which is the nation?s longest running team sports championship.
Awaiting Des Moines will be the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer. The Wizards are the defending cup champions and are currently in third place in the MLS Eastern Conference. The game is scheduled for Aug. 3 at Kansas City.
En route to the round of 16, the Des Moines has knocked off three professional teams: the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, the Charleston Battery and the Silverbacks. The Riverhounds play in the United Soccer League?s second division while the Battery and Silverbacks are both first division members. The USL first division is one step below the MLS.
Gruenebaum has started all three games in cup play and has been one of the top goalkeeper in the PDL this year. The Menace reside atop their division in the PDL standings and Gruenebaum ranks third in the league in goals against average.
