Former Wildcat John Holmes finished play at the U.S. Amateur Championship today, Aug. 24, falling to Dane Burkhart in the first round of match play to end his run at the title.

Holmes led by two strokes after making par on the eighth hole, but Burkhart birdied the next two to make it all square. The pair played evenly until Holmes took the lead again on 14 and held it over the next two holes before a bogey on 16 evened the score for a fourth time on the afternoon. A Holmes bogey on 17 gave Burkhart a one-stroke lead and the two held par on the final hole to give Burkhart the win.
