Juniors Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk lost a tough match in the finals of the doubles draw Monday at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C. Coventry also fell in her semifinal singles match.
The No. 9 duo of Coventry and Schwenk lost to the tournament?s No. 1 seed Daniela Bercek and Jessi Robinson of Duke 8-4 in the finals. While disappointed that the doubles team did not win the tournament, Schwenk believes that their run through this regional was a tremendous experience.
?I think making it to the finals of this tournament was a reward for working so hard this fall,? Schwenk said. ?Today was really a hard fought match. We expect to be back in this position next year at this tournament and win the finals match.?
The 15th-ranked Coventry ended her singles play in the semifinals against Duke?s Jackie Carleton. Coventry lost the first set 6-3, then came back to win the second set 3-6, before falling in the final set 6-4 to the nation?s No. 68 player.
?Like the rest of our fall tournaments, this was a great learning experience for our team,? head coach Carols Drada said. ?Everyone has worked really hard all fall to implement our strategies and to minimize mistakes. If we continue at this rate we will achieve our goals this spring.?
?I?m really proud of the work ethic Kim and Joelle have put forward this fall. They are great leaders for our team.?
Women?s Tennis will next be competing Nov. 3 in the SEC Fall Coaches Championships in Peachtree City, Ga.
