Sophomore Kentucky guard Samantha Mahoney was named to the 2005-06 preseason All-Southeastern Conference team, the league office announced Tuesday. Mahoney, a Detroit native, was selected to the conference?s preseason second team.
Mahoney, 5-foot-10, started 27-of-34 games played her freshman season and was second on the team, averaging 10.6 ppg. In league action, Mahoney averaged a squad-best 12.5 ppg and she also was named to the All-SEC Freshman team. She was second on the team in steals with 30 swipes last season.
?I?m very pleased that Sam was selected as an All-SEC performer in the preseason polls,? UK Coach Mickie DeMoss said. ?She certainly has earned the respect through her performances as a freshman last year. She really carried a lot of the load for us last season and is ready to step up to the challenge again this year.?
The preseason teams consist of a minimum of eight players on each squad, voted on by the head coaches of each SEC institution. This is the second annual preseason All-SEC team for women?s basketball. Last season, guard/forward Sara Potts was named to the conference?s first ever preseason women?s basketball team.
