Nashville, Tenn. ? The University of Kentucky women?s soccer team battled but fell by a final score of 1-0 at No. 20 Vanderbilt (14-3-1, 7-2-1 Southeastern Conference) in its regular season finale tonight, Oct. 28, in Nashville. The Wildcats move to 7-5-7 on the year and 3-5-3 in the SEC with the loss.
The scoreless game was just the third for the Wildcats this season. UK tied Georgia in double overtime and fell 1-0 to No. 23 Ole Miss.
The Commodores got on the board first as Meredith Kohn recorded her second goal of the year on a free kick during the 29th minute. Lauren Mitchell assisted on the goal that gave Vandy the 1-0 lead.
UK goalkeeper Anne Ogundele made three first-half saves on six VU shots, including four on goal. The Cats had four shots in the half, but did not record a shot on goal in the opening period.
Ogundele and the UK defense held the Commodores scoreless in the second half, but the Cats managed just one shot in the second period and didn?t record a shot on goal for the first time this season.
The Cats are now 0-4-3 this season when their opponent scores first.
?I thought we played well but we again we didn?t finish our early chances,? said head coach Warren Lipka. ?We?re playing probably our best soccer at this point but we need to finish our chances.?
The Cats return to action next week, Nov. 3-6, at the SEC Tournament in Orange Beach, Ala.
