Two University of Kentucky women?s soccer players have received recognition for their outstanding efforts on the field and in the classroom with selection to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams. Sophomore Kelsey Fenix received first-team all-district IV honors and is automatically nominated to the Academic All-America ballot. Sophomore Sarah Gaunt was named to the third team.
The Academic All-America and All-District squads are selected by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. Kentucky is a member of District IV which includes Division I schools in Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio.
Fenix, a midfielder from Westlake, Ohio, is an Exercise Science major with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. She started 17 games for the Cats this season and scored a career-high two goals. She also recorded an assist in the Wildcats 2-1 overtime win over South Carolina. Fenix led the team and ranked fourth in the Southeastern Conference with 52 shots this season. Fenix was a member of the Fall and Spring Athletics Directors Honor Roll and has been named to the Dean?s List. Fenix was also named to the 2005 SEC Good Works team which recognizes athletes from each school who give back to their community in superior service efforts.
Gaunt owns a 3.7 GPA while starting every game for the Cats this season. She tied for the team-lead with a career-high six goals. The Mason, Ohio, native scored game-winning goals in back-to-back games this season against Eastern Kentucky and Miami of Ohio. Gaunt also dished out a career-high four assists, including the pass that led to the game-winning overtime goal at South Carolina. She was second on the team with 16 points this season and ranked third on the team with a .552 shot-on-goal percentage.
