Begley, Huffman, Lane Advance to National Ballot for Academic All-America: Kicker Taylor Begley, cornerback Antoine Huffman, and offensive tackle Hayden Lane have been elected to the Academic All-District IV Team and will be on the national ballot for Academic All-America.
Begley has graduated already with a 3.82 grade-point average and a degree in electrical engineering. He is working on his master?s degree in electrical engineering and has a 4.0 GPA in graduate school. On the field, he ranks third in school history in total points (213), second in extra points made (117), and fourth in field goals made (32). He also set the school record for consecutive extra points made with 92.
Huffman completed his bachelor?s degree in telecommunications with a 3.45 grade-point average. He is working on his master?s degree in mass communications. Last Saturday, he collected two pass breakups in the win over Vanderbilt, giving him the UK career record in that category with 26 PBU.
Lane notched a 3.95 GPA while completing his bachelor?s degree, a double major in anthropology and classics (study of Latin and ancient history). He has begun master?s work in history. He has started the last 21 consecutive games at offensive right tackle, the longest active streak on the team.
To qualify for nomination for Academic All-America, a player must be a sophomore or higher in academic and athletic standing, be a starter or key reserve, and have a career grade-point average of 3.2 or higher.
The Academic All-District IV Team is comprised of players from the states of Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. District winners are placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America, which will be announced in December. The Academic All-America Team is sponsored by ESPN The Magazine and selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Kentucky Takes Slight Lead in ?Big Blue Crush?: After two days, Kentucky leads the ?Big Blue Crush? blood drive by a narrow margin of nine pints, 1,067 to 1,058.
The Big Blue Crush is an annual competition between the University of Kentucky and the University of Tennessee to see which school can generate the most blood donations in a week. The Big Blue Crush is vital to the local blood supply as there is usually a slowdown in blood donations during the holiday season.
The Big Blue Crush will continue through Fri. Nov. 18. The winning school will be announced at the Tennessee-Kentucky game on Nov. 26. Kentucky leads the all-time series, 9-7, and there has been one tie.
In Lexington, fans may donate blood at the Central Kentucky Blood Center at 330 Waller Avenue. Donors receive a T-shirt, McDonald?s meal coupon, and are registered for prizes.
