RALEIGH, N.C. ? The University of Kentucky men?s golf team won its first tournament of the season today, Apr. 8, with a 10-under par 854 at the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate in Raleigh, N.C. The Wildcats defeated second-place Duke by four strokes to take home the title.
Kentucky shot a third-round 287 (-1) to finish at 854 for the two-day tournament. Duke finished second with a team score of 858 (277-291-290), while North Carolina slipped to third place with a total of 860 (282-285-293). Kent State was fourth with a score of 864 (287-289-288), while Houston rounded out the top five with a total of 866 (285-289-292).
Sophomore Brad Doster led the Cats and tied for fifth overall with a three-round total of 211 (67-72-72). Doster finished at five-under par in his fourth top 10 finish of the year. Senior Matt Kohn had his second top 10 finish after he tied for ninth with a score of 214 (70-73-71). Freshman Dan Woltman tied for 20th after he fired a one-under par 71 in the third round. Woltman finished with a score of 217 (74-72-71). Freshman Andy Winings tied for 22nd overall with a score of 218 (69-75-74), while junior Tyler Wilson rounded out the scoring for the Cats and tied for 45th with a three-round total of 223 (69-81-73).
?We are very young, but absolutely loaded with talent. It was great to see the guys come together and earn our first win of the season,? said head coach Brian Craig. ?Hopefully, this will be the first win of many over the next two or three years with this core group of young guys. I also cannot think of a better way to head into the SEC Championship in a couple of weeks.?
The Wildcats return to action April 21-23 as they travel to Sea Island, Ga., for the Southeastern Conference Championship.
