LEXINGTON ? For the fifth time this season, a Kentucky Wildcat has been named the SEC Player of the Week as John Shelby earned the honor this week, it was announced by the league office on Monday.
Shelby led Kentucky to a win over Louisville and a sweep of No. 7 South Carolina during the week. In the four games, he batted.471 with two home runs and four doubles while driving in seven runs. He also hit a game-winning walk-off home run to beat the Gamecocks in the 11th inning on Friday. The sweep of South Carolina was the first for UK over a ranked opponent since 1991.
Shelby had at least one hit, one RBI and one run scored in each of the four games. He also doubled in all four.
The five Player of the Week honors awarded to Kentucky players this year is an SEC record, besting the total of four set three times previously, as recently as 1992.
Sean Coughlin was the first Wildcat to garner the award, doing so after the UK swept Northwestern. After a week break, Ryan Strieby and Antone DeJesus earned the honor in consecutive weeks when Kentucky won series against LSU and Tennessee, respectively.
Since then, a Wildcat has won the award every other week as Coughlin won it again two weeks ago and Shelby this week.
For the year, Shelby is batting .262 with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs. The home run and RBI totals are both second on the team.
