PHILADELPHIA ? The University of Kentucky track and field teams wrapped up action at the 112th annual Penn Relays Friday evening. All three UK men?s sprint relay teams had solid performances to advance to Saturday?s finals.
The men?s 4×100 relay ? freshmen Jose Acevedo, Gordon McKenzie and Brandon Austin, and sophomore Nathan Browning ? opened the day with a third place finish (40.85) in heat five and advanced as one of the top 16 teams to tomorrow?s two-heat finals.
Shortly after, the men?s 4×200 relay of Acevedo, Browning, junior Luis Luna, and McKenzie took the track and also advanced to Saturday?s finals with a first place finish in their respective heat. The Cats posted the sixth fastest time of the day (1:24.25).
The UK men?s distance medley relay had a strong showing with a seventh place finish (9:53.36). Sophomore John Richardson ran the opening 1,200-meter leg, followed by senior Dedrick Tillerson (400), and sophomores Stephan Smith (800) and Andre Silva (1,600).
The men?s 4×400 relay closed out the day with a second place finish in heat two (3:08.91) and will race in tomorrow?s consolation finals. Browning ran the opening leg, followed by McKenzie, Acevedo and Luna. McKenzie filled in for sophomore Justin Harrison who sat out the race due to a minor injury.
Earlier in the day, Tillerson and senior Thomas Masthay competed in the 400 hurdles. Tillerson ran below the regional standard and finished 15th out of 76 hurdlers with a mark of 52.22. Masthay finished with a time of 55.29.
Tomorrow, the Wildcat men will compete in the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 finals and also the 4×800. Richardson will run in the Olympic Development Mile Run, while the women?s 4×800 squad will compete. Live stats and results for the meet will be available throughout the day on ukathletics.com.
