Kentucky softball player Ashley Fertic has been named to the Southeastern Conference Good Works Team, it was announced today. The SEC sponsors Good Works Teams for all 20 league sponsored sports. The Good Works Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.
Fertic, a junior from Valrico, Fla., has worked as a volunteer for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. She works extensively with the Cats Cultivating Character program where she visits local elementary schools and teaches third graders character lessons throughout the year. Fertic also volunteers at the UK Children?s hospital playing BINGO and visiting with patients and she volunteered at the YMCA Fall Carnival.
The utility player sold programs to benefit Hurricane Katrina victims and worked with the UK Athletics? food drive to benefit God?s Pantry. Fertic rang the bell for the Salvation Army last winter, volunteered at the Hope Center in downtown Lexington and at Special Olympics bowling. She was also an American Heart Walk participant and stocking stuffer for needy families at Christmas.
Fertic was recently named to the Frank G. Ham Society of Character, which recognizes those student-athletes that have gone above and beyond to fulfill the five commitments of the CHAMPS/Life Skills program. These five commitments are academic excellence, athletic excellence, career development, personal development and community service.
This season, Fertic set new career highs in batting average (.222), runs scored (20), home runs (2) and RBI (21). She was second on the team with 21 runs batted in and was third on the team with 20 runs scored.
