CINCINNATI, OHIO. – The UK women’s soccer team was unable to muster enough offense as they dropped their season opener to the Cincinnati Bearcats 1-0.

The Cats (0-1-0) controlled the ball in the offensive end for the first eight minutes of the match tallying three shots including an effort by Megan Jones that required a save from Cincinnati goalie Andrea Kominski.

The Bearcats (1-0-0) controlled possession for much of the rest of the first half which included Katie Norton’s goal off a free kick after a handball by the Wildcats three yards outside the top of the 18-yard box in the 24th minute of the match. Senior Kentucky goalie Anne Ogundele kept the Wildcats in the match fending off two more Cincinnati chances, once off a another free kick at the top of the 18-yard box.

Cincinnati threatened again with 25 minutes left in the match when Ogundele made another acrobatic save off a header from Becky Imhoff.

Kentucky had one of its best opportunities to get on the board with 11 minutes left in the match when Katie Fahey made a move on a Bearcat defender and took a shot, but Kominski was there to corral the attempt and preserve the UC lead.

UK provided a flurry of action deep in the Cincinnati end of the field in the final minute but was unable to connect on anything.

The loss dropped the Wildcats’ record against Cincinnati to 6-6-1 all-time while also dropping their record in season openers to 7-5-3.

UK will close out weekend action on Sunday when the team heads to Evanston, Illinois for a 12:00 p.m. match against the Northwestern Wildcats.
