Brooks Pleased With the Results
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky football team had a one and one-half hour scrimmage Saturday night at the Nutter Training Center, the team?s final major scrimmage before the season opener.
One goal of the workout was to simulate preparation for the opener, so the Wildcats went through their pregame warmup drills and began practice at 8 p.m., which is kickoff time for the Sept. 3 lidlifter at Louisville. The team scrimmaged on the artificial turf of the Training Center, which is similar to the surface at Papa John?s Cardinal Stadium. The scrimmage was primarily a ?ones vs. twos? format, with the first-team offense vs. second-team defense and vice versa. There also was situational work with special teams, two-minute offense, and goal-line plays.
Coach Rich Brooks seemed to be generally pleased with the results and said there were no major injuries. He also said that the long-awaited announcement of the team?s starting quarterback might be made on Monday.
?Probably at the media day I?ll announce the starters. There may be a few that are still up in the air,? Brooks said. ?We?ll have to look at it (the scrimmage film), evaluate it, and talk about it tomorrow.
?There were some good things (in the scrimmage) — very physical play, some good contact, some good plays by both the offense and the defense. (Punter) Tim Masthay had a pretty good day. I think it was a fairly successful scrimmage.?
Asked if this was the team?s most successful fall camp during his four seasons at Kentucky, Brooks said, ?We probably have from an injury standpoint. But we?re still making too many mistakes at this point for my liking. I tend to forget the things that happened in the first three camps. I?m focused on what?s happening now and I?d like to see fewer mistakes. We are playing faster than a year ago. Some of the positions are faster and we?re reacting faster, particularly on defense.?
