The University of Kentucky men?s golf team posted the low round of the day with a second-round 293 to climb five spots to second place at the 2006 Topy Cup in Tanagura, Japan. The Wildcats trail Arizona State who leads the 10-team field with a two-round total of 572 (289-283). UK is eight strokes back with a total of 580 (297-283).
Junior Brad Doster shot the best round of the day, jus tone stroke shy of his career-best, with a second-round 67 to bring his total to 138 (71-76). Doster is now six-under par and tied for second in the individual standings. Arizona State?s Nicholas Lemkey leads the field with a seven-under par score of 137 (69-68).
Freshman Alex Volpenhein shot a second-round 68 to bring his total to 143 (75-68) and is tied for fifth overall. Sophomore Andy Winings shot even par and is tied for 29th with a score of 149 (77-72), while seniors Tyler Wilson (77-76) and Cale Barr (74-79) are both tied for 47th overall with scores of 153.
?We played very well in the second round, but we?re going to have to play extremely good in the final round to catch Arizona State,? said head coach Brian Craig. ?Brad Doster and Alex Volpenhein have played very solid and we look forward to the challenge tomorrow. The hospitality in Japan couldn?t be any better and this has been just a fantastic trip.?
The third and final round will be played Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Tanagura Country Club.
