WILLIAMSBURG, Va. ? The University of Kentucky men?s golf team is currently 12th after one round of play at the PING Preview at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. The Wildcats posted a first-round score of 12-over par 292 to stand 13 strokes behind Georgia who leads the 15-team field with a score of 279 (-1).
Texas A&M is second with a score of 280, followed by Florida who is third at 281 (+1). Defending national champion Oklahoma State is fourth with a team total of 282 (+2), while UNLV rounds out the top five after shooting a first-round 283 (+3).
Freshman Alex Volpenhein birdied a pair of holes and leads the Wildcats after finishing at an even par 70 to tie for 12th overall. Junior Brad Doster is also in the top 20 with a 17th-place 71 (+1) after recording three birdies on the day. Sophomore Andy Winings finished tied for 41st with a score of 73, while senior Andrew Stephens and freshman Brian Belding rounded out the scoring for UK with first-round scores of 78 and 79, respectively.
The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 3, for the second round of the three-day tournament.
