LEXINGTON ? The 13th-ranked Kentucky men?s soccer team faces its toughest test to date on Saturday at top-ranked and undefeated SMU at 8 p.m. ET at Westcott Field.
The Wildcats are riding high, off to an 8-2-1 record with the highest ranking in school history after knocking off No. 6 South Carolina this past Sunday. Meanwhile, the Mustangs are holders of the nation?s best record at 11-0-1. They are one of just three unbeaten teams left in Division I.
Kentucky is led by senior striker Riley O?Neill, the reigning National Player of the Week, who ranks fourth in the nation in scoring. He?ll have to contend with the nation?s fourth stingiest goalkeeper in Matt Wideman.
However, this will be a game between more than just two individuals. Kentucky and SMU are the only two teams in the country to rank in the top 10 in both goals and goals against average.
Each team is 1-0 in Conference USA action having won last weekend before taking all week off to prepare for Saturday?s monumental clash.
Kentucky has had its troubles with the Mustangs, a final four team just a year ago. Last season, the Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead before O?Neill was sent off with a red card and SMU rallied for a 2-1 win, netting the winner with just three seconds left in regulation.
In the previous two meetings between the two teams, SMU scored identical 3-1 wins in Dallas, the first of which came in the 2000 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. The Wildcats have struggled at Westcott Field in general. Besides the losses to the Mustangs, UK dropped a 2004 match to Tulsa and tied South Carolina last year, 0-0, before falling on penalty kicks.
