LEXINGTON, Ky.? The University of Kentucky?s men?s tennis team opened the second round of competition in the Wilson ITA Southeast Regional Tournament on Saturday with four singles players in action. At the conclusion of day two of the tournament hosted by Kentucky at the UK Boone Tennis Center and the Lexington Tennis Club the Wildcats were no longer in the field of the 16 remaining players.
Sophomore Bruno Agostinelli was the only Kentucky player to advance to the Round of 32 after a two-set victory over Bethune Cookman?s Thabani Sithole, 6-3, 7-6(3). Agostinelli faced Georgia Southern?s Martin Stiegwardt in the third round and fell in two sets, 7-6(3), 6-3.
Agostinelli and junior William Ward were the only remaining Kentucky doubles players in action at the beginning of day two of action. The duo fell in the second round to Mississippi State?s Ivan Bjelica and Phillippe Frayssinoux, 8-6.
Ward dropped a tough three-set decision to Alabama?s Sammy Struyf, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. Senior Peter Bjork and junior Marcus Sundh also fell in the Round of 64. Bjork lost to a fellow-SEC foe in Tennessee?s Ben Rogers in three-sets 2-6, 7-6(4), 7-5. Sundh playing in only his second match of the fall season fell to Georgia Southern?s Mattias Skold, 6-4, 6-2.
The ITA Southeast Regional action continues at the UK Boone Tennis Center Sunday at 9 a.m. Champions in doubles and singles action will be crowned on Monday at the same location.
