NEW YORK – The Kentucky track and field squads concluded competition in the seventh-annual New Balance Collegiate Invitational Saturday in the Armory Track and Field Center in New York.
The women?s 4×400 meter squad finished seventh in a time of 3:42.76 ? its best mark in nearly a decade. Junior Lavera Morris? (Orlando, Fla.) gutsy performance highlighted the relay squad. Morris? shoe came off following the first lap and she finished the final 1,400 meters of the third leg wearing just one shoe.
Mikel Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who on Friday set the school record in the 60 meter hurdles with a mark of 8.11 in the preliminaries, broke his personal-best with a 8.03 to finish ninth in the finals.
Senior Georganne Way (Lititz, Pa.) posted a season-best time of 2:09.06 in the finals of the women?s 800 meter run to finish fifth in the event. Sophomores Taylor Miller (Owensboro, Ky.) [9:56.55] and Andrea Halasek (Georgetown, Ky.) [10:08.37] finished 10th and 22nd respectively in the 1,000 meter run. Katherine Peterson (Louisville, Ky.) was 13th in the women?s mile with a time of 5:06.
Freshman Emily Bernhardt (Marietta, Ga.) set a personal best in the weight throw with a toss of 56-6.
Men?s mid-distance runner Ryan Finn (Ajax, Ontario) finished 11th in the finals of the 800 meter, while Andr? Silva (Centereach, N.Y.) and Bruce Hordusky (Erie, Pa.) were 14th and 20th, respectively in the 3,000 meter run.
?This meet was a good indicator for us of the things we need to work on heading into next weekend,? UK head coach Don Weber said. ?We are looking forward to working hard this week and all getting better.?
