The Kentucky women?s tennis team bowed out of the Southeastern Conference Tournament with a heartbreaking 4-2 loss to third-seeded Vanderbilt in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at the Boone Tennis Stadium.
Having lost to the Commodores 6-1 just six days ago, No. 6-seed UK put up a valiant fight only to come up short when Amanda Fish completed her come back over Kim Coventry on court one, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. The teams had traded points up til then and Joelle Schwenk was poised to score the Wildcats third point on No. 2 singles, leading 6-4, 5-4 when the match was suspended.
Whitney Spencer routed Courtney Ulery for the second time in a week at No. 5, 6-1, 6-2, to earn Kentucky?s first point. That brought UK within 2-1. Vanderbilt had taken the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 and gotten a victory from Taka Bertrand ? 6-1, 6-2 over Carolina Escamilla ? up to that point.
Shortly after Spencer?s win, Jessica Giuggioli knotted the match at 2-2 with her easy 6-3, 6-2 victory over Liberty Sveke. The victory avenged a defeat for the Italian from Saturday.
Continuing to go back and forth, the Commodores retook the lead when Catherine Newman finished off Sarah Woestmann, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3, setting up Fish?s big victory.
Vanderbilt exacted revenge for their defeat to UK in last year?s SEC Tournament as the Wildcats sprung the upset in the semifinals. The Commodores move on to face second-seeded Florida in Saturday?s semifinal round. The match is slated for 10 a.m. on the Stadium Courts.
