COLUMBUS, Ohio ? As just a second-year player in the MLS, former Kentucky goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum has already established himself as one of the league?s top keepers while playing for the Columbus Crew.
In his first three starts, Gruenebaum has a miniscule 0.67 goals-against average while not yet suffering a loss. He is ties for the league lead in shutouts with two and has the most saves of the top six goalkeepers in the league with 13. His .867 save percentage is second best in the league, trailing only the New York Red Bulls Ronald Waterreus.
Gruenebaum opened the year with a 190 minute shutout streak while blanking the Red Bulls and New England Revolution, both playoff teams a year ago.
While at Kentucky, Gruenebaum re-wrote the UK goalkeeping record book, shattering the career record for saves and tying the mark for shutouts. He is the only player in school history to post back-to-back goals against averages below 1.00, doing so an incredible three straight years while earning first-team all-conference honors each season.
