LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky men?s soccer team, looking to rebound from a 4-2 loss to Louisville on Thursday, returns to action with a Sunday afternoon matchup with the Cleveland State Vikings. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex.
Kentucky (1-2-0) played in front of the fourth-largest crowd (2, 307) in the history of the UK Soccer Complex Thursday, as it battled intrastate rival UL in a 4-2 loss. The Wildcats came out strong against the Cardinals, as sophomore Tim Crone netted the games first goal and his first of the young campaign. UL responded with four unanswered goals, before senior Aaron Swanson gave the Wildcats the momentum coming out of the half, netting his third goal in the past two games.
The loss marked just UK?s first to its state rival since a 2001 setback, dropping the Wildcats all-time advantage in the series – dating back to the UK soccer program?s inception in 1991 – to 9-3-4.
Swanson, a transfer from Dayton, has emerged as the team?s top offensive threat. The forward leads the team with three goals, while Crone and sophomore Barry Rice have each contributed goals. Rice, a Conference USA All-Freshmen team selection in 2006, has anchored a physically tough defense, joining defenders Matt Weiler and Stephen Beiro to have started all three games in the back for UK. Senior Nathan Marks, the Conference USA preseason Defensive Player of the Year, has made a switch to the midfield, necessitated by injuries to 2006 returning midfield starter Jase Griffiths and senior defender Andrew Alexander. Sophomore keeper Dan Williams has tallied 18 saves, while playing in every minute of the first three contests.
The Wildcats own a 2-0 all-time record over Cleveland State, with its last meeting coming in a 3-1 win in 2002 at the UK Soccer Complex.
