LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The Harmony Community School defeated the University of Kentucky junior varsity team 17-6 Saturday afternoon at Commonwealth Stadium.
Kentucky out-gained Harmony 350-198 in total yards, but six turnovers kept the Wildcats from scoring more consistently. True freshman wide receiver Kyrus Lanxter (Alcoa, Tenn.) scored the Wildcats? lone touchdown on a 34-yard pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Mike Hartline (Canton, Ohio), with 1:20 remaining in the second quarter.
Harmony got on the board first with a 25-yard field goal from Tim Williams with 2:36 remaining in the first quarter. The Hurricanes extended the lead to 10-0 when Terrance Lewis picked off a pass and returned it 77 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Kentucky struck back with an 81-yard drive, capped by the TD pass from Hartline to Lanxter. Harmony closed the scoring with a 13-yard pass from Steven Rimmer to Kent Irvin with 2:17 remaining in the game to make the final 17-6 margin.
Kentucky redshirt freshman Trey Bowland (Knoxville, Tenn.) rushed for 122 yards. Lanxter led the receiving effort with six catches for 89 yards and the TD. Quarterbacks Will Fidler (Henderson, Ky.) and Hartline combined for 183 yards through the air with a touchdown strike.
The Harmony School, a preparatory school located in Cincinnati, was led by a pair of receivers ? Irvin Kent (5 catches for 54 yards, one TD) and Jesean Godfrey (three for 63) ? who combined for 117 receiving yards. Godfrey also led the team in rushing with 42 yards and finished with 139 all-purpose yards.
The Wildcats used a strong defensive performance, led by sophomore linebacker Michael Schwindel (Hawesville, Ky.). Schwindel recorded a team-high 11 tackles, including three stops for loss, and two sacks for 16 yards. Sophomore linebacker Mikhail Mabry (Mililani, Hawaii) had eight tackles, a fumble recovery and also forced a fumble.
“I was fairly pleased with the way we played defense and disappointed in our offensive performance,? UK head coach Rich Brooks said. ?Defensively, they only scored one touchdown on us and I thought the effort was pretty good. We had a lot of guys get some valuable experience and playing time. I thought we’d be able to move the ball more consistently. Even though we out-gained them, we had way too many mistakes to sustain drives.”
This was Kentucky?s only junior varsity game of the season.
Kentucky?s varsity squad returns to action Saturday when it plays host to LSU. Kick-off in Commonwealth Stadium is slated for 3:30 p.m. EDT and the game will be carried live on CBS.
