LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky women?s tennis team has started the year strong. Following a pair of wins last weekend, the #34 Cats defeated #23 Michigan 7-0 at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex Sunday. This win marks the third straight for the Cats in the 2008 season.
Freshman Alaina Trgovich and Sophomore Whitney Spencer fought hard for their win against Michigan?s Lindsey Howard and Denise Muresan. The Kentucky doubles team took their match into a tie breaker, winning 9-8(4). This win also clutched the doubles point for UK, putting them 1-0 over Michigan.
In singles play, Junior Christine Johnston played a very competitive first set, winning 6-3. However, Michigan?s Muresan pulled out the next win 6-4. The Wildcats were able to bring home the win, settling the match with a 6-2 decision.
Sophomore Sarah Woestmann, who is ranked 69 nationally, won both her doubles and singles matches of the day. Also sharing in dual wins were Freshmen Megan Broderick and Alaina Trgovich. Sophomore Whitney Spencer shared Trgovich?s doubles win and was triumphant in singles against Michigan?s Kari Wig. Spencer and Wig battled through the first two sets, 6-7(8), 6-4. A hard fought tie-breaker was won by Spencer 1-0 to clinch the seventh point for Kentucky.
This is the second game during the 2008 season which UK has controlled the whole match, and the fourth year the Wildcats have started the season 3-0.
The Kentucky Wildcats will host in-state rival Louisville Wednesday at 1 pm (ET) at Boone Tennis Complex. Next weekend the Cats will travel to Bloomington, Indiana to face the Hoosiers (2-1) on Saturday, Feb. 2. The match is set to start at 10 am (ET).
