LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The No. 54 University of Kentucky men?s tennis team earned its second win of the season over a ranked team beating conference foe No. 57 South Carolina 5-2 Friday at Boone Tennis Complex.
The Cats (6-5, 1-0) opened the match by clinching the doubles point with a clean sweep of the Gamecocks (7-3, 0-1). Both ranked Wildcats earned singles wins in straight sets. No. 36 Bruno Agostinelli won in the number one slot 7-6, 6-2 over Yevgeny Supeko. In the number two slot, No. 63 Will Ward took out Gamecock Diego Cubas only surrendering three games 6-3, 6-0. Senior captain Marcus Sundh and freshman Will Beck earned victories at the fourth and sixth spots respectively.
?First of all, South Carolina is a very good team, they are just really talented, UK coach Dennis Emery said. ? In my opinion this was the best we have played all season. I was really proud of the way we played, especially our doubles teams. That is the best they have played all season long.
?Will Ward in particular played really well. This was the best he?s played all season. Marcus Sundh also really stepped up today; he played one of the best singles games all season. It is always good to start off with a win in the conference. We had a 5-5 non-conference season and now we start our second season. It?s kind of like a fresh start, not to say we didn?t play well but this is a good way to start the conference season.?
The Wildcats continue SEC play Sunday when the Cats? battle No. 11 Florida at 1:00 pm ET at the Boone Tennis Complex.
