AWENDAW, S.C. — Junior Kentucky golfer Andy Winings (Brownsburg, Ind.) fired a career-low 66 Tuesday on the final day of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate as the 51st ranked Wildcats finished the three-day tournament in ninth place.
The Cats, who rebounded from a difficult first round, made steady progress throughout the tournament to finish 16-over-par at the Bulls Bay Golf Club with a 868 (296-297-275) among an excellent 12-team field consisting of seven teams ranked among the nation?s top-25.
Winings posted two rounds under par, finishing the event in a tie for seventh place. Winings blistered the course Tuesday with seven birdies to finish the tournament at 2-under-par 211 (75-70-66), leading the Wildcats. Winnings? 66 Sunday, ranked as the second lowest score of the entire tournament.
?Andy Winings is a fantastic leader on and off the course,? UK head coach Brian Craig said. ?We had some success making some putts. We have great ballstrikers on this team and it was fun to see the putts drop today.?
Kentucky finished with a total of 42 birdies on the tournament.
North Carolina State captured the event by rallying from sixth place on the opening day of play to take the tournament crown. N.C. State, after firing a 288 on the tournament?s opening day, posted back-to-back scores of 279 and 297 to finish at 838. The Wolfpack were led by the tournament champion Matt Hill, who carded a nine-under-par, shooting a 204 (71-67-66).
UK junior Ben Fuqua (Danville, Ky.) finished in a tie for 27th with a 217 (70-77-70), while senior Cale Barr (Versailles, Ky.) recovered from a first-round 74 to finish tied for 33rd with a 218 (74-76-68).
Sophomore Brian Belden (Emmaus, Pa.) concluded play in 63rd with a 226 (77-78-71) and senior Brad Doster (Winter Park, Fla.) finished in 51st with a 223 (77-74-72).
