FEDERAL WAY, Wash. ? Freshman diver Stephen Andrews secured All-America accolades with a seventh place preliminary finish on the one-meter board during day one of the NCAA Men?s Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by the University of Washington Thursday.
Andrews? seventh place finish in the prelims guarantees a top-eight finish for the first-year diver, and an automatic All-America distinction. The freshman scored 330.85 on the one-meter board to open competition and lead the individual performers for the Blue and White.
Kentucky?s 200-free and 400-medley relay squads are among the nation?s top-16, and will partake in the consolation finals tonight in Federal Way. Both relays finished 15th overall in the morning?s preliminary heats.
The 200-free relay team of junior Warren Grobbelaar, sophomores Eric McGinnis and Alex Forbes and junior Shane Eliason tapped in a season-best time of 1:18.91. Grobbelaar began the race with a 20.01 split time, with McGinnis finishing in a time of 19.59, Forbes in 19.45 and Eliason taking the final leg in 19.86.
Eliason, senior Will Vietti, Grobbelaar and freshman Tyler Reed placed 15th in the 400-medley relay in the second team-event. Eliason took the backstroke leg in a time of 49.17. Vietti touched in a time of 53.46 in the breaststroke leg. Grobbelaar took the fly leg in a time of 46.84, and Reed brought it home in the freestyle swim tapping in a time of 43.09. The quartet finished in a season-best clip of 3:12.56, shaving almost two seconds off of their time in the same event at the SEC Championships.
McGinnis and Forbes were the other two individual participants in today?s first day of competition. The first-time NCAA participants tapped in 32nd and 43rd, respectively in the 50-free. McGinnis finished with a time of 19.89, while Forbes clocked in 20.22.
Tonight?s finals meet does not resume until 7 p.m. Pacific Time which is equivalent to 10 p.m. Eastern Time.
